Sinister Film Review
After researching Sinister, I decided to go and watch it to help me have a better understand of the theme ‘horror’
The title of the film suggests something subtle and creepy. But nothing could be further from the case. Explicit shocks, with crashing musical stabs create a new kind of sinister. But definitely not a film that haunts you when you sleep.
I thought the film was original and was interesting, it kept me on the edge of my seat the whole way through, the cheap scares worked well and made the whole cinema jump out of there skin – I think the shock factor works well in films and it created a lot of controversy . It has been credited as "the sort of tale that would paralyze kids' psyches". And deeply frightening horror film that takes its obligation to alarm very seriously.
It has given me a new outlook on the horror genre, but has made me come to the conclusion I won’t be using graphic images in my trailer as although they will work well, the portrayal and filming would be beyond my ability

Sinister - Poster Analysis
I think this is a unique poster, it definitively represents its title effectively. The dictionary definition for Sinister is “Giving the impression that something harmful or evil is happening or will happen” and if a child painting a disturbing picture in blood isn’t harmful then I don’t know what is.
The cracked grey wall background connotes danger and danger, also that nothing it clear. The main photo of the girl contrasts with the title, a naive innocent girl surely cant be ‘sinister’? The irony works well and portrays clearly. I like the contrast and it is something I will consider when doing my poster.
The blood painting itself is a menacing and haunting image and one that you cant get out your head. Also underneath it is some remains of a video tape which links well with the trailer. It makes the audience inquisitive about what there used for. The black title with the slight shadow works well for the poster, it is definitely a creepy font. The tag line which is also featured in the trailer leaves the audience with quite an ambiguous feel, who would they see? Overall I think this poster is effective and very eye catching.
Sinister - Trailer Analysis
The trailer begins with the image of a dark house on a dark night (typical convention) then we get a brief shot of some kind of symbol which must have some significance, We then hear a police woman giving a report on a ‘grizzly’ murder and the report of a missing girl … we are shown a child’s drawing of a family being hung. This disturbing image, 10 seconds into the trailer should straight away frighten the audience.
It is then day light and onto another shot of the same house, and a new family moving into the house where the family were hung (another typical horror convention) we are then given some background information on the characters. I think this is a good technique to use as it is the start of a relationship with the audience and characters. All the time this is being shot there is a low monotonous sound which increases in pitch. It then stops when the dad enters the attic. This signifies an important scene. There is a box left in the middle of the attic floor – this should build tension as we as the audience want to know what’s in the box. There is an old film projector with films to watch… The family that lived in the house before are shown having fun then BAM there is a quick snapshot of the bottom of there legs as they are hung. My initial reaction to this was *gasping* in disgust. It defiantly has the shock factor.
As the trailer progresses there are more images of different families on the different tapes, all the tapes are of the families murders. We are shown a car being lit on fire and a child going underwater, these images just give the audience a taste to expect absolute disgust and repulsion. Screams and high pitch noises are used during this, it is used to keep the audiences pulse racing and makes them more ‘on edge’ We are then shown a same symbol and an explanation and we now know that this symbol represents a child murderer. To an audience who have a child or younger brother or sister this would be uncomfortable for them to take in as they would apply it to there own life. We are then given a reflection of this ‘boggol’
“Once you see him” “Nothing can save you” the fact this is shown indicate the family are doomed. This should make the audience emphasise with the family . The heartbeat in the background represents the families life line, it is a good way of building tension. We then are shown a clip of a child bending back out of a cardboard box – this horrifying image is intended to show the audience this family is in trouble and there family is being possessed. The family then leave and we are left with the image of the film projector ran out of tape which signifies the family has maybe ran out of time? We are then shown flashes of axes and knifes all connote death and lots of images of possessed children whispering – it is very disgusting then we are left with a flash of boggol. This trailer takes typical conventions and makes them 100 times scarier. It scared me and that’s an achievement.
When A Stranger Calls - Poster Analysis
I think this poster is very plain but it does actually represent then film in a good way. The standard colours of reds, blacks and whites have been incorporated – these conventions are something I will consider when doing my film poster
This poster doesn’t give much away about the film, its is quite an ambiguous picture, leaving the audience to let there imagination wonder what it is about. But this minimalistic approach doesn’t leave the audience with an impression, there are no dominant features which allow the audience to remember it.
The scariest thing about this poster is definitely the picture on the phone, mobile phones are used in todays society very frequently so using it in a menacing way is a good ironic way of portraying horror. The hand in this photo has been edited – it has been made more grim and dirty, this could be to represent the uncleanliness of the film.

When A Stranger Calls - Trailer Analysis
The first thing I noticed about this trailer straight away was the chilling music, this music sets the tone for the trailer. The zoom to the image of the phone evidently informs the audience this phone is important. We are then shown brief flashes of a screaming girl in black and white – I don’t think this surrealism works as you don’t quite catch the full image when you are watching the trailer, this happens twice. The second flash is more effective as you can make out the shadowy figure of a man. This creates a ambiguity which intends to frightens the audience. The phone starts to ring which then starts the tension, a naïve girl answers the phone and asks “Is anyone there” all we can hear are the breaths at the receiving end. This is a typical technique used in horror trailers to create suspense. I found it almost comical as it is such a typical way of scaring people. We are then given some dialogue which literally informs the audience that this girl is going to be all alone in the forest. Letting us know she is vulnerable and out of helps reach. A house is then shown, a big scary house by a lake… I think this trailer so far is extremely uncharismatic and has no attention grabbing aspects. There is then a gap filled with twilight noises, and more images of the empty rooms in the house. I think this was supposed to create tension for the audience. IT seems quite unrealistic at this point as she is sat with no television on in the living room. The phone then rings again and a ‘menacing’ voice asks “have you checked the children” now this would scare parents as it would be there worst nightmare for there children to be abducted and it would definitely make us teens feel uneasy as it our job to keep children safe when babysitting. I think this makes the trailer appealing as it scares different ages. After checking the children and seeing there safe this allows the audience to breath and feel a bit at ease – I think this is a good technique to set the audience up for something scary. But the shaking of the door is not a ‘jump out of my skin’ moment it was actually quite anti climatic.
There is then the continuing ringing sound with a heavy bass – this slowly builds in volume and the flash’s of images increase in speed , this is intended to build tension - but what doesn’t make this very scary is the actresses plead for the caller to stop ringing, she doesn’t sound that scared. This will transfer to the audience and not make us less scared.
When the police ring and inform that the call is from inside the house, this is the point where the trailer starts for me. The lights turn off which means darkness had flooded the house, horrifying screams are being played as the children are missing, but the girls reaction isn’t that scared, we see the figure of a normal man, we don’t see his face which leaves it ambiguous for the audience. There is then a moments pause when the girl is in some water – I think this was used to frighten the audience… It didn’t scare me as there was just no real emotion portrayed. It’s the screams that had been edited over the top which added fear to the trailer. Then the phone beeping and flashes of images this created a manic sentiment which worked well with the trailer, in these flashes of images we see that the children are safe – I think that this spoils the trailer as the audience now know that they end up alright! I want to make sure this does not happen in my trailer!

The Human Centipede - Poster Analysis
This poster for the film ‘The Human Centipede’ is disturbing but intriguing. The main image of a person being pressed against a window or mirror and seeing the mouth open as though he is exhaling a scream, is a scary and frightful sight. There is also blood smeared around the hands of the person which means he/she has been injured or harmed, this is a good technique to horrify the audience. The fact there are 3 people behind the person but you can’t see there faces allow the audience to use there imagination to wonder what’s happened to the other people. The dark greens, whites, reds and blacks create a grotesque visual image. Also the fact the image is blurred connotes nothing is going to be quite straightforward or sane in the film. The colours also connote dirtiness which should sicken the audience. “their flesh is his fantasy” this sick quote is purposed to disturb and make the audience feel very uncomfortable. This poster dosent give much away, but enough to make people interested, This is a good example of an interesting film poster.

The Human Centipede - Trailer Analysis
This trailer begins with shots of two vulnerable girls - we know they are vulnerable as they are about not wearing much clothes and they are alone together. The music in the background; a light xylophone tinkling emphasises the exposure and naivety of the girls, the music sets us up and builds tension for whats coming. The weather is then another key element which helps sets the scene, The stormy weather always connotes danger and horror. Then when the car breaks down we know that the girls are in trouble. There are shot walking alone through woods in the rain, tension should start building at this point. The weather continues to worsen, now the audience should be feeling very uncomfortable. When they are welcomed into a strangers house, which is lit with candles that are giving a red warm glow this shows that the man could be evil and menacing. He grips the sofa and seems almost aroused by the woman’s arrival. The lights are flickering, then we have a close up of a gagged man, we now no this man is dangerous. Then the written dialogue gives us some background information. Then we are shown the procedure that this mad man wants to carry through which should really shock and disturb the audience we are shown the reaction of the actors faces which should make us emphasis with them. We hear screams of terror which should scare the audience, then given subtitles “no hope” “no mercy” which means that nothing is going to end well. We see a girl un successfully escaping, we can see the horror and terror which should really frighten people. The shots then speed up and we see quick snapshots of dead bodies and blood and surgical weapons,. All these should disgust and make the audience want to look away. We are then left with the films tag line “Your flesh is his fantasy” and the gruesome finished product of the surgeons sick idea. This trailer is effective because no matter how much it disturbs the audience it makes you want to watch it. The only problem is that I feel it gives too much away.

Defining Horror
"An overwhelming and painful feeling caused by something frightfully shocking, terrifying or revolting; a shuddering fear"
"An intense feeling of fear, shock or disgust"
Understanding horror is the first step when creating a horror trailer, you need your audience to apprehend the horror concept.
I researched and questioned my peers and found out what people are scared of, this will help and enable me to build a storyboard for my trailer.
1) The Unknown - People are scared about what they don't know. People's imaginations are there own worst enemy.
2) Being Alone - This is when people are most venerable, being isolated and away from help is a frightful thought.
3) The Dark - Having your sight taken away from you and not knowing what is around you links nicely with 'The Unknown' many children are scared of the dark because they don't have there sight to reassure there safety.
4) Death - Nearly everyone in the world is scared of dying, especially before you have lived your life to the full. "I don't want to die" is a common line used in horror films.
5) Ghosts - The thought of having someone who has died to haunt you; is a disturbing and scary propostion. Ghosts are used in many horror trailers because there is no evidence that they don't exisist...
6) Gore - Having body parts being ripped apart and your insides spilling everywhere is a disgusting and horrifies hundreds of people. Seeing other peoples bodies being beaten, broke and torn apart is scary because it could happen to anyone.
7) Torture & Pain - It's natrual for someone to be scared of pain, no one likes being hurt. And people are scared of how much pain could be caused physically and mentally.
8) Clowns - This is an ironic fear, but I was surprised by just how many people find clowns terrifying, I guess having something that is supposed to bring laughter being used as a weapon of manipulative terror is what scares people.
9) Animals (snakes, spiders, etc) - This irrational fear is very common. Many people fid the thought of having there bodies covered in insects and harmful animals very scary.
10) Aliens - This sci-fi fear is used in horror films because there is know real evidence that they do or don't exisit. Links with 'The Unkown'
I will encouprate many of these points into my trailer.

Do's And Don'ts Of A Good Horror Trailer
Trailers are produced to promote and advertise new films, each genre of film will adapt different techniques to make sure they have breached out to there target audience.
Horror trailers need to scare and entertain the audience.
DON'T tell us what the film is about...
If you really want to scare people, you have to withhold certain information a persons imagination is one of the scariest things ever, as they create and include there own personal fears. They need scary scenes and mysteries but some suffiencent clues, the plot should be left for the audience to discover.
DO cut the 'Announcements'...
Sometimes images speak louder than words when creating an atmosphere in a film, if scenes are repeatdly shown of horrifc horror with occasional phrases, the audience can read and fill the blanks. A voice over normally creates an anti-climatic input on the trialer.
DON'T include all of the scary scenes...
A good horror traielr should never show all the scary scnees on the trialer, but the viewers do need something to hold onto. The scary clips should be chosen wisely if its too much the audience will be unmoved when watchin the full film but if you give to little, the audience will not be scared - BUILD THE STORY AROUND THE HORRIFYING CLIPS
DO add scary music...
A chilling musical score is imperitive when capturing audiences attention. Whenever scary music is being playes people stop what they are doing do stop and watch what they know will be frightful. It has to be intense and engaging everytime they hear the music they will think of the film

Evaluation
ALL MY EVALUATIONS OF MY FINAL PIECES ARE IN SEPARATE BLOG POSTS

Double Page Spread: http://mediastudentevietantram.blogspot.co.uk/2012/04/double-page-spread-final.html
Double Page Spread Emulation
With my double page spread I didn't really emulate any style, I wanted a new unique style so i took elements from Kerrang magazine and adapted them.
I used the side column idea in my double page spread as i thought this would allow me to put more emphasis on my image, also the top left corner headline i emulated also.
I feel out of all music magazines there are, Kerrang is my closest emulation in all parts.
Double Page Spread FINAL
This is my final double page spread, overall i am happy with my layout and fun design. I think i have established what I wanted to achieve with my photo choice and interesting content. This piece of work has proven good techniques used in photoshop, this is shown by the colour change that has been done from normal to black and white. I think my striking main image is the centre focus of my page, i believe no matter how good the content of a interview may be, if the image isn't interesting the page will be ignored. This is another reason why i put a different zoomed in photo on the bottom, so the readers interest will be focused on them straight away. The band name is also eye catching because it is a way of advertising the bands name and identity. If i could change or improve anything it would be more content on the top half of my double page spread, i feel looking back the tour dates section needed more information. But i am happy with my final piece and all the font alterations were definitely worth it! My target audience would find this page exciting and readable, they would be interested in the interview as they are not afraid to welcome new music into there life. Another reason why they would find this page appealing is because of the personal imprint the band has on the page, they would establish the link with the front cover, contents and double page spread and after seeing the band repeatedly they should feel inclined to find out more about them. I chose the red black and white theme because, it a powerful colour scheme and i think it represents my magazine genre perfectly. I chose the clear tahoma font because it was a simple easy to read style that could be a small size and still be readable.
Double Page Spread Progression
Double Page Spread Interview
For my interview I wanted a comical down to earth style, so when writing and asking the questions i tried to make them mind boggling and also informative for my audience.
What would you describe your band as?
Beth: A unique punk rock band
How do you plan to keep you band successful?
Luca: Keeping our audience updated with new songs monthly, doing mind blowing tours and keep close contact with the fans
Ed: Having close relationships with our fans is very important
So guys, how did ‘The bitten monarchy’ form?
Beth – Well it’s a funny story, we were at primary school together and we always joked about being in a rock group. Then we met again at college and decided to live our child hood dream haha
Ed- I didn’t really want to join but I got persuaded by everyone
Your new song ‘wont back down’ is being released on the 20th March, what’s the song about?
Harry- It’s a political message saying how we wont back down from David Cameron, and how we feel the conservatives are unjust idiots.
Do you plan on a world wide tour anytime soon?
Luca- Well we plan to decide that after we’ve done our tour in the UK which were still doing!
Who has the worst habits in the band?
Ed- Beth does she always picks her nose! its disgusting
Beth- ED - HIS FEET
What bands do you relate yourself to?
Beth- No one we have our own unique style, but we aspire to be as big as muse someday
How did you come up with your band name?
Harry: again it is related to politics and the British monarch. If they listen to our music hopefully they can try and see the message were trying to say.
If you could play a show anywhere, where would it be?
Ed: India
Harry: America! Beth and Luca: Bali we love to surf
Thank you ‘the bitten monarchy’ - Evietantram
RIOT!FEST and Reading Festival
I created a festival which revolves around my magazine, RIOT!FEST would closely link to Reading, it would feature similar artist such as Paramore and Blink 182. I think having a festival is a great way for your magazine to gain recognition. Reading is a very popular festival so if RIOT!FEST became equally as popular and synergised with RIOT! the magazine, then brands like Shockwaves, the distribution and intake of magazine numbers would increase dramatically. my target audience would be seen at places like Reading festival. I think RIOT!FEST would be better than Reading because it would feature many more female artist which would attract the male population :)

Contents Emulation
I have taken aspects of this Q contents page, and emulated into my design. I mainly focused on the layout. I was struggling to establish a layout design so i researched some magazines and found this style best suited my magazine genre. The main image being in the left hand corner leaves room for the contents stories to be stated, a small main image somewhere makes the page look that bit more appealing. I have simplified my version of the contents page because my magazine is aimed at a younger audience compared to Q. So using easy and limited text allows my audience to get to the page they want to view with ease.
Finished Contents Page
This is my finished Contents page, I think my layout and simplicity of the page makes it a unique and interesting interpretation. My research of contents pages showed, many pages were filled with text in font 12. I asked my family and peers if this irritated them, and 90% answered yes, it did. I wanted to avoid the crammed text, so I left my contents page limited with 'content' but with subheadings which allowed my audience to think out side my box, 'let the mind wonder' and want to know more about the chosen headings. The images are striking all through this page, the high contrasts and black and whites supports my 'edgy' theme. These are techniques I learnt through photoshop. Also i had to crop and re-size the images on the border and the left to make them merge into shape which allowed room for text. A negative about this page would be the font the stories are actually written in, it is quite UN-clear, this is a change i would do if i were to improve my finished product even further. I think my chosen target audience would find this page appealing because its different and interesting, which should be listed characteristics that my target audience would have.
Contents Progress
I have finally added borders and the stories that i have included in my magazine, i have used the same fonts and colours |
I have now added page numbers in the same font as the contents, and a sub image which links to a story i have written about. I put it in black and white so there wasn't too much color on the page. |

Comparison
I have emulated a certain magazine style, to represent the music genre I am covering. The contrast of light colours like yellows, whites and reds on the black; connote punk and rock music. I have studied magazines like KERRANG which continually use these colours and styles to make my magazine fit into the right music genre. Also the text that looks like stencils also is used on my magazine and the comparison example.

FINAL FRONT COVER :D
This is my completed final front cover.
I believe RIOT is a magazine you would find in a music store and even a supermarket, my magazine is a unique and modern female punk/rock collaboration. There is no other magazine that reaches out to a female audience that talks about punk/rock music. There is definitely a space in the market for a magazine like mine. RIOT is like a female version of Kerrang, its target ed audience is female instead of male. I have emulated certain rock elements from the Kerrang magazine. I think my fonts and color scheme are consistent and link with my rock style. I also have incorporated my RIOTFEST ticket give a way to make my magazine more appealing. I would have liked to have put another image onto my front page, but i didn't want to crowd the page, this is why I put a simple album cover design on the front. My main image is quirky and fun i wanted an edgy and eye catching image and i believe this is definitely one. My red, yellow, white, red and black colour scheme is a consistent theme that runs thorugh my magazine - these colours connote rock music and controversy because they clash. My magazine is different and these conflicting colours support that motion. I added a puff to my front page to add more realism and to trigger interest. My audience would find reading about gigs informative and useful. Overall i am happy with my RIOT magazine, it has all the elements a standard magazine would withhold and a unique edge which most magazine do not have!
FRONT COVER PROGRESSION
After this i added all the rest of my sub stories, bar code, price and magazine number. all small changes which made my magazine look more realistic. |

Choosing my title font
If you notice here, my title of my magazine closely links with he font style of an extremely successful rock group. This style of distorted stylised text is widely known. If i have a similar style of this serif font people should automatically denote my font and see its rock style resemblances
.The group released just one studio album in their career. The remaining seven were live albums, compilations and a movie soundtrack.
Although it existed for just three years, the band left an indelible mark on punk rock and on British pop culture.
The group was so controversial that band members and fans were victims of physical attacks.
Their songs attacked everything from the British royal family to capitalism to politics.
These aren't all the qualities i want to have to have featured in my magazine but certainly the controversy will enable people to talk and promote RIOT!

Image Adjustments
Here I am using the photo editing option, I am making my image pixalated like a cartoon. I wanted to experiment with different designs to see which made my image stand out more.
In image below i have done the same but i have increased the contrast and toned down the brightness to create a unrealistic photo adaptation for a more surreal and editoral look

Draft Front Covers
I wanted to experiment with the photos from my shoot, and see which adjustment would work. Here i have experimented with the contrast and pencil tool, this made the photo have an edgy and cartoonish look. I liked this version of the photo but it wasn't a very realistic effect, and i wanted the front cover image to be realistic.
Here i have added my chosen title, i have eemphasised Beth's hair, and . i wanted to show contrasts and make sure Beth is the main focus. i wanted the title to fade into the background
I tried out the black and white tool here, i wanted an antique effect, kind of retro and cool. but i don't think this worked very well, so i added the saturation of Beth's hair to see if the made a difference to the final image ... it didn't. It was iinteresting to try out different effects though

Music Magazine Audiences
Music is a huge part of everyone's life. My magazines audiences age range (17-28) this is normally the period in ones life, when you discover who you really are, whats your identity. I hope RIOT! will enable young people everywhere to conform there own unique style and persona. 65% of young people do not read magazines because of prices, With my magazine i want to encourage people to read more and discover new music in a literal way. Hopefully my magazine will stand out and appeal to my audience and will make them want to pick it up and see whats inside.
Front Cover Layout Template
This is the layout I'd like the magazine to follow, i don't want it to be over-crowded, and I'd like everything that features on it to be interesting and relevant.

Contents Research
I like the main image on this contents – its funny and interesting. The quote in the bottom corner is nice input put a bit of personality into the contents. I also like the white, red and black theme – connote rock and metal. i like how the contents doesn't have a mast head. Its unique, but i don't think the image quality is great. The main text of the contents is the feature part because its highlighting all the articles that will be shown in the magazine. There is also additional information underneath the subheading to drip feed the reader. Even the main image fits with the colour scene - his tie matches the colours used. The layout is unique, it looks like a page is being turned at the top left corner. Each small detail like this makes the magazine look more interesting and complex. I think i will emulate this style for my contents
The split page effect, works well with the rugged rock theme. The layered photos make is look informal, I don’t like the amount of text used – people get annoyed with content of a content page. I like the ripped page effect on this contents, also the contrast of colours and the way all the pictures are linked to one band – although this restricts the reader to one genre of band . I think the font size is too small but there is lots of information to digest. They’ve got a featured KERRANG magazine in the top left which is a nice touch to the magazine. The small bit of blogged writing in the centre gives the reader a little taster of what going on in the magazine. i like how the plain white background contrasts with the picture backgrounds it makes the images stand out more. the splattered numbers link with the text on the left. The cute little recycling icon on the bottom left represent a wholesome effect to the magazine. Over all i think its an edgy contents.

Again the split page has been used separates images from text The content is clear and easy to read which works well because it is easy to seek information. Pictures relate to page number which i think is interesting - the image corners are jaggeres which links to the red stars in the right hand corner, i think this little detail improves the whole rocked rugged theme. San Serif shows it’s modernised and sticking to the house style as the rest of the contents page is also in red white and black. The splattered '70' and 'contents' links with the front cover of this contents - a continuous theme can lead to a continuous reader.

Craig Mcdean - Photographer
I have been reasearching photographers, and came across Craig Mcdean he's an editoral photographer and i think his work is lovely, he's english and focuses on fashion, he began his work in london and now does work for vogue and calvin klein and gucci. He's won awards for his work :) he currently is working in new york. Before photography Craig worked as a mechanic.
I like how the intense smoke has been captured |
i like how you have to squint your eyes to get this picture - its edgy and weird |
The way the model moldes into the background but still stands out works really well - good idea for my contents page! |
The urban feel to this picture makes it have a rocked out conotation |
Music Magazine Research
This magazine contrasts the other magazines below compleatley - It's crammed with pictures, puffs, headings, sub headings and competitions. i think it is too crammed there is no real main image or one directional eye view. It almost makes your brain fuzzy with how much orange and reds. I think what works well is the rock theme the magazine KERRANG manage to consistently deliver in every magazine. The puffs use are fun and thought provovking - i have got some good ideas from this magazine
This sophisticated magazine cover is very rare to find on the shop shelves these days. Many classical music magazines aren't sold in shops anymore - I think tis is a plain formal magazine that appeals to upper class women who play violin - The main image is different from typical female models because shes not covered in fake tan and its showing of her musical talent and not her physical assets - I dont think visually though this magazine is eye catching or interesting, the plainess and small texts makes it boring and nothing pops out enough

This magazine has many strengths, its main being the strong front image - this eye catching unique design allows people to look twice, because of the effective layering, it makes you concentrate and take in what this cover contains! Also the colour theme suits the cover wells - i think it is targeted at a male audience due to the more masculine colours and shades. it's a very informal cover and i think that the idea is very creative and different. The only weaknesses i'd say were that the title is unclear and it doesnt contain any eyecatching stories to read in the magazine!
