MAGAZINE :)

Double Page Spread Emulation

With my double page spread I didn't really emulate any style, I wanted a new unique style so i took elements from Kerrang magazine and adapted them.

I used the side column idea in my double page spread as i thought this would allow me to put more emphasis on my image, also the top left corner headline i emulated also.

I feel out of all music magazines there are, Kerrang is my closest emulation in all parts.

Double Page Spread FINAL

This is my final double page spread, overall i am happy with my layout and fun design. I think i have established what I wanted to achieve with my photo choice and interesting content. This piece of work has proven good techniques used in photoshop, this is shown by the colour change  that has been done from normal to black and white. I think my striking main image is the centre focus of my page, i believe no matter how good the content of a interview may be, if the image isn't interesting the page will be ignored. This is another reason why i put a different zoomed in photo on the bottom, so the readers interest will be focused on them straight away. The  band name is also eye catching because it is a way of advertising the bands name and identity. If i could change or improve anything it would be more content on the top half of my double page spread, i feel looking back the tour dates section needed more information. But i am happy with my final piece and all the font alterations were definitely worth it! My target audience would find this page exciting and readable, they would be interested in the interview as they are not afraid to welcome new music into there life. Another reason why they would find this page appealing is because of the personal imprint the band has on the page, they would establish the link with the front cover, contents and double page spread and after seeing the band repeatedly they should feel inclined to find out more about them. I chose the red black and white theme because, it a powerful colour scheme and i think it represents my magazine genre perfectly. I chose the clear tahoma font because it was a simple easy to read style that could be a small size and still be readable.

Double Page Spread Progression

To finish, i added a close up of the two main band members to allow the reader to see them up close and personal, adding a personal caption to the photo. I did this to develop relationships with the band and reader. I then added little finishing touches to make the page more full and informative.
Then after writing my interview i pasted that onto the black and white space and color coordinated it to match my theme. I also emulated the over sized interview quote which many magazine uses, this is too draw attention to important things said in the interview. I also put the name of my magazine on the top right corner to enable my audience to never forget the name :) and the name of the band, which is also on the front cover and contents.

This is the bassist of my DBS, i started by increasing the photos contrast, then I sectioned the last quarter of the magazine and made it into a new layer so it could be in black and white - this is because my interview would be over the top of the main image and it would enable the text to be seen more easily and clearly

Double Page Spread Interview

For my interview I wanted a comical down to earth style, so when writing and asking the questions i tried to make them mind boggling and also informative for my audience.

What would you describe your band as?
Beth: A unique punk rock band

How do you plan to keep you band successful?
Luca: Keeping our audience updated with new songs monthly, doing mind blowing tours and keep close contact with the fans
Ed: Having close relationships with our fans is very important

So guys, how did ‘The bitten monarchy’ form?
Beth – Well it’s a funny story, we were at primary school together and we always joked about being in a rock group. Then we met again at college and decided to live our child hood dream haha
Ed- I didn’t really want to join but I got persuaded by everyone

Your new song ‘wont back down’ is being released on the 20th March, what’s the song about?
Harry- It’s a political message saying how we wont back down from David Cameron, and how we feel the conservatives are unjust idiots.

Do you plan on a world wide tour anytime soon?
Luca- Well we plan to decide that after we’ve done our tour in the UK which were still doing!

Who has the worst habits in the band?
Ed- Beth does she always picks her nose! its disgusting
Beth- ED - HIS FEET

What bands do you relate yourself to?
Beth- No one we have our own unique style, but we aspire to be as big as muse someday

How did you come up with your band name?
Harry: again it is related to politics and the British monarch. If they listen to our music hopefully they can try and see the message were trying to say.

If you could play a show anywhere, where would it be?
Ed: India
Harry: America!                                                                                                                                   Beth and Luca: Bali we love to surf
Thank you ‘the bitten monarchy’ - Evietantram

RIOT!FEST and Reading Festival

I created a festival which revolves around my magazine, RIOT!FEST would closely link to Reading, it would feature similar artist such as Paramore and Blink 182. I think having a festival is a great way for your magazine to gain recognition. Reading is a very popular festival so if RIOT!FEST became equally as popular and synergised with RIOT! the magazine, then brands like Shockwaves, the distribution and intake of magazine numbers would increase dramatically. my target audience would be seen at places like Reading festival. I think RIOT!FEST would be better than Reading because it would feature many more female artist which would attract the male population :)

Contents Emulation

I have taken aspects of this Q contents page, and emulated into my design. I mainly focused on the layout. I was struggling to establish a layout design so i researched some magazines and found this style best suited my magazine genre. The main image being in the left hand corner leaves room for the contents stories to be stated, a small main image somewhere makes the page look that bit more appealing. I have simplified my version of the contents page because my magazine is aimed at a younger audience compared to Q. So using easy and limited text allows my audience to get to the page they want to view with ease.

Finished Contents Page

This is my finished Contents page, I think my layout and simplicity of the page makes it a unique and interesting interpretation. My research of contents pages showed, many pages were filled with text in font 12.  I asked my family and peers if this irritated them, and 90% answered yes, it did. I wanted to avoid the crammed text, so I left my contents page limited with 'content' but with subheadings which allowed my audience to think out side my box, 'let the mind wonder' and want to know more about the chosen headings. The images are striking all through this page, the high contrasts and black and whites supports my 'edgy' theme. These are techniques I learnt through photoshop. Also i had to crop and re-size the images on the border and the left to make them merge into shape which allowed room for text. A negative about this page would be the font the stories are actually written in, it is quite UN-clear, this is a change i would do if i were to improve my finished product even further. I think my chosen target audience would find this page appealing because its different and interesting, which should be listed characteristics that my target audience would have.

Contents Progress

I have finally added borders and the stories that i have included in my magazine, i have used the same fonts and  colours

I have now added page numbers in the same font as the contents, and a sub image which links to a story i have written about. I put it in black and white so there wasn't too much color on the page.
Here i have chosen two main images from my previous photo shoot and incorporated them into one. They are still fun and interesting images, I increased there contrast and brightness to make them more 'eye opening' I then picked my CONTENTS font which links with my RIOT font from my front cover.
